A capsule wardrobe is all about getting organized. Essentially it is a game plan to make it easier for you to shop for clothing, get dressed for the day, and change fashion with the seasons. Everyone wants to look pretty and feel fabulous. You might love wearing clothes, but not necessarily shopping for them. A capsule wardrobe is ideal for those of us who want to spend less time and money on clothes and accessories. Do you stand in front of your closet crammed full of dresses, skirts, and tops, and think, “I have nothing to wear?” Then a capsule wardrobe might be the answer you’re looking for.
Purge and Sort First
The two main goals of a capsule wardrobe are: a) reduce the total number of pieces in your closet to anywhere from 15 to 40 per season and b) only include items you really love to wear.
Remove any items that you no longer like or know that you won’t be wearing ever again, including shoes, purses, and garments bought for a one-off event. Throw out anything that’s not worth donating or selling. None of the articles of clothing that remain in your future capsule closet should be one-of-a-kind. You should be able to mix-and-match tops with skirts/pants, pants with jackets and tops, etc. Items that are still in good condition but you’re not quite ready to part with just yet, move them out of room and store them someplace else.
Your Capsule Wardrobe should reflect Your Lifestyle
Paring down what you now own to the “bare” essentials can seem impossible. But as you sort through your wardrobe, you’ll see immediately that there are clothes in your closet that no longer reflect your current lifestyle. For example, after three lapsed gym memberships, you’ve given up on the gym, but you still like to go for brisk walks. Instead of all of those exercise outfits now you only need a good pair of jeans and multi-purpose running shoes, both of which can be paired with other articles of clothing in your capsule wardrobe. Do you go out to eat often? The outfit you wear for a variety of social occasions can also be worn at the office.
How to make a Capsule Wardrobe work for You
Choose a number that works for you – this will be the number of articles of clothing you will have in your closet at any one time. Let’s say the magic number is 25. While the clothes in your capsule wardrobe will change every season, the number of items should remain roughly the same. Only clothes for the current season reside in your capsule wardrobe closet – items you won’t be wearing for the upcoming three months are stored somewhere else.
Core items for building a capsule wardrobe include a basic pair of comfortable denim jeans, a little black dress, a blazer, a cardigan, a crisp white blouse, and a pair of dress pants. Keep in mind that articles of clothing such as blouses, tees and lighter-weight skirts or suit jackets are cross-seasonal, saving time and money shopping for items you can use from one season to the next.
